Take it away, Trent (please!):
FRANKS: I?m afraid that this administration somehow now will declare the peace dividend and really just exploit the issue for political reasons and not really have the insight to do what?s necessary to protect this country in the future because we still have an Iran that is on the cusp of gaining nuclear weapons capability, we still have terrorists all over the world that are steeped in this ideology, we still have the potential of radical Islamists in the Pakistani military appropriating nuclear weapons and passing that along to terrorists.
That's weird. This was all true during the Bush administration. But at that time, the fact that we were "on the cusp" but nothing had yet actually exploded meant Bush was "keeping us safe."
In fact, that was all true plus Osama bin Laden still wasn't dead. But Franks is just, you know, genuinely concerned that killing Osama bin Laden will make President Obama lazier than the guy whose job it used to be to try to kill bin Laden, but instead failed to get it done, while simultaneously shattering all previous records for presidential vacation time.
Oh, and also didn't kill him. Did I mention that? Because that's different from the situation we have now. Where Barack Obama is the president and Osama bin Laden is dead.
