As you probably know from watching Fox News or reading conservative blogs, Barack Hussein Eugene Debs Obama is America's first socialist President, and the only President to be born in Kenya. There's no way a true blue conservative American would change their otherwise low opinion of him. Nothing short of killing Osama bin Laden himself could do that.
Oh, wait... he did kill bin Laden. So let's see how he did with that.
Although Americans of all political groups overwhelmingly approved of the U.S. military action that resulted in bin Laden's death, and Americans overall have viewed the president more positively since then, the event moved conservative Republicans much less than other Americans to see Obama in a better light. The group's approval rating did increase after the bin Laden killing, but by a minimal two points compared with the six-point national average. Conservative Republicans have traditionally been the group least supportive of President Obama.Let's repeat that.
Thus, it appears there is little Obama can reasonably do that would dramatically increase his support among conservative Republicans. That is one reason Obama's approval ratings have been among the most polarized of recent U.S. presidents.
Thus, it appears there is little Obama can reasonably do that would dramatically increase his support among conservative Republicans. So why try? Wouldn't it make more sense to ignore them and concentrate on everyone else?
Now, to the extent that they, too, are Americans (no matter how misguided), a rising tide lifts all boats. Do things that benefit the country, and everyone (including conservatives) benefits.
Work to find things they can agree with you on? Maybe, so long as you agree with the things that make up common ground.
But make concessions expecting them to "come around", eventually? What a waste of time. if bin Laden's death doesn't get them to approve of this President, nothing?and I mean nothing?will. Accept it and move on.
Oh, and by the way, in addition to Gallup (which shows some of Obama's best numbers in 16 months), here's another poll showing improving numbers for Obama:
CNN poll: Obama ends May with significant boost in job approval
In that poll, 76% of conservatives disapprove of Obama's job performance despite the boost. The bottom line is they are never going to support you, and you don't need them to win.
